Habanero Corn Nuggests

This past week I received what is undoubtedly the single most delicious snack I have ever had in my life.  Habanero Corn Nuggets http://www.krema.com/Corn-Nuggets-Habanero-12-oz-Bag/productinfo/CORNHABAN/ and a jar of Hot and Spicy Peanut Butter.  I have yet to try the Peanut Butter.  These were courtesy of my good friend, Erin, who has the pleasure of living in Ohio where these goodies are made.  Let's just take a moment to talk about these corn nuggets.  If you like habanero anything, you will for sure enjoy these tasty treats.  They are crunchy and spicy.  Seriously, what more do you need out of a good snack?!  Nothing.  I usually go for Mrs. Renfros Hot Habanero Salsa and some blue corn tortilla chips, but these bad boys, these will for sure become a staple in my mouth.  I just ordered 5 more bags online... obsessed?  You bet I am.  I went through half a bag yesterday, albeit, that's all I ate in between my spin on the bike and second run of the day.  The only thing that stopped me from eating the entire bag, was gearing it up for the second run in freezing cold weather.  When I say freezing, I mean FREEZING, 20 degrees witha wind chill of 11, ahhhh!

On Saturday we went to the QT2 Holiday Bash in Boston, which was fun, nice to put some faces to names.  No one was wearing spandex either.. shocking.  The food, ahhh, the food at Maggiano's was delic and it was an open bar.  I opted for more food than beverage, calamari, chicken parm, chicken marsala, BREAD and repeat.

This week is Christmas week and it happens to be a recovery week!  So I can hopefully start and finish all my Christmas shopping.  I'm lucky enough where I work, we close for a few days around the Holidays, so after Wednesday, I only have to work two days next week!  Can you say relaxation??

December

The last month of the year has officially arrived.  Went out for a nice ride on Saturday, which will most likely end up being the last outdoor ride until Spring... On Sunday we went down to M.I.T and did a quick swim, and by quick, I mean a warm up and 100 yards.  The 100 yards we got filmed from underwater to get our swim stroke analyzed.  It was SO cool to see and extremely eye opening.  Lots to work on.  Swimming is tough, lots of things to think about while you're doing it.  The pool at MIT is GORGEOUS, super clean and crystal clear water! Check it...

Then, we decided since we were in Boston, we would hit up the North End and we went to Pizzeria Regina's -- delic!  Then, of course, we had to stop at Mike's Pastry's for some cannoli's.

This weekend we both have a 5K on Saturday which will be nice to finally do a race again.  Haven't raced since September, hopefully we can both improve on our times from last year.  This will also be a good indicator of our HR Zones, which of course, mine are still SLOWWWWWWWW!

Tis the season

For eating!  So this past week was Thanksgiving, I made two Pumpkin Pies...

Two of these delicious bad boys... double chocolate peanut butter pie and I made peanut butter whipped cream.  I had a food baby to the max!  It was so delicious.
This is Sam!
My cousin Bryanna and I worked off some of those calories by playing Just Dance on the Wii, I am the WORST at this game.  The key to winning is only moving your hand that the controller is in, I however move my whole body which results in losing, every single time.
My cousin's 2 year old Everett, he LOVES Sam.
So now that Thanksgiving is over, it's back on track with the core diet, speaking of which, they're giving away one free nutrition plan today, so go try and win it, it's a $275.00 value... WORTH it!  I've also decided to try juicing, there are certain dark greens I cannot eat, because I do not digest them... at all.  Juicing makes it easier to digest foods like spinach, kale, beets, etc.  So I'll try and get a juice somewhere in town to try it out before investing in a juicer.  There used to be a delicious place called All Juiced Up that offered smoothies and fresh made juices, I should have been brave and tried one before they closed.  Why is it that all the good healthy options close around here?  This town needs to get healthier!  I ended the weekend with a chicken burrito bol from Dos Amigos with no rice, extra black beans, roasted red peppers and portobello mushrooms, yum!  Oh and on a side note, I tried fresh pomegranate for the first time yesterday... AMAZINGNESS!  Seriously, try this fruit if you have not yet.  It's a sweet, tart crunchy seed.  So, SO good.

Double switch, triple switch, golf... huh?

So, we're nine days into November, two short weeks away from Thanksgiving!  A day of eating, drinking, napping, eating and drinking!

It was a nice relaxing weekend after a first week back to training.  Three days of lifting weights, which I've never done until now.  Man, was I sore!  I also got back in the pool after almost a month of being out of it, started it off with some crazy weird drills, thanks to QT2!  Skate, zipper skate, sweet spot, golf, etc.  The golf stroke requires you to count how many strokes it takes you to do in 50 meters plus your total time and that equals your score... voila, you have a swim stroke called golf.  The less strokes you do plus the faster time you do, the better your score (the lower the better, just like golf).  I managed to get faster on the four 50's I had to do, with less strokes each time, the last one ending on 34 strokes.  It's tough enough remembering the names, and then having to remember how to do them and in the right order.  The first day of doing those drills took us about an hour, just from stopping and looking at the paper where we had the descriptions written down.  Tomorrow should be a bit faster.  However, these drills are meant to be SLOW, and they are tough!  It feels so good to be back in the water though, I've missed it. I even remembered how to do flip turns, wooweee!  Did some nice rides on the bike trainer and sweated like a complete pig.  The weather this weekend is looking like it will be super nice, nice enough for an outdoor ride--up at the beach!!

This past weekend I made some delicious ratatouille -- eggplant, and lots of other veggies in a tomato based sauce -- delic!  Core diet to the max.

Sunday we took a hike up to Mt. Kearsage, it was GORGEOUS outside.
                                                                 True blue skies...
                                                               Sam was loving it.
Some big mountain way off in the distance
                                                                 and some more

Halloween treats

On Saturday we headed up to Portland, ME, it was part birthday gift/last hurrah before no more beer drinking and bad food eating.  Man, oh man, what a day it was.  Portland has some great places to check out.  We started the day out here:
Had a delicious sampler which was SeaDog's Stout, Porter, IPA, Pale Ale and Blonde Ale.

Then we made our way to the Sebago Brewing company for some wings with ghost pepper sauce (DELICIOUS)!  Then making the 1.8 mile trek to our BnB we saw some Occupy Maine protestors, at which point (due to the alcohol), I thought was hilarious and we need to get a picture.

Then on our way to what might possibly the greatest bar we've ever been to -- Novare Res.  If you enjoy craft beers, this is a must go to spot.  Anyways, we saw a couple getting their pictures for their wedding.  Clearly a picture of this was needed.
Now, for the best part of the night.  Novare Res http://novareresbiercafe.com/ , where we finally tried the 120 minute IPA (18% alcohol), this would certainly have kicked our asses, however, we were already well on our way after trying a 17% cider.  Woooweee!  A pumpkin beer, and some others I cannot remember, and we had ourselves a fantastic time!

Below the bottle is their beer bible (at least that's what I'm referring it to).  Pages and pages of all their selections.

The label on Dog Fish's 120 minute IPA.

Eventually we made our way (45 minutes late, thank you, Novare Res!) to our dinner reservations at David's.  Then it started to snow. I unfortunately forgot to get pics of the ridiculously awesome food we had here.  An appetizer of a fried egg in panko bread crumbs was how the dinner began.  It ended with a HUGE homemade chocolate chip cookie that was sandiwching vanilla ice cream.
The next morning we had breakfast at the BnB, bacon and homemade french toast with Maine Blueberries.  It was at that table where I had, what hopes to be last sip of coffee!

Now it's time for training to begin again.  After a few weeks off and being five pounds heavier, I've got some work to do!  12 weeks of strength training and crazy drills in the pool.  Along with some rides on the trainer (unless we get some warmer weather with clean roads) and some runs!  It's almost time for snow shoe racing as well, which makes me very excited!!

So in good ole' NH, this is what we woke up to this morning!
This forced me to get on the trainer for 30 minutes.  Super icy roads meant no run.  Hopefully tomorrow morning it will be better so I can get in a good run before having a great celebratory weekend!

Testing, testing, 123...

Hello out there!  So I've decided to venture into this big bad world of blogging.

You might be asking yourself why Melnic?  Well, most of my family calls me Melnic along with some friends.  It all started when my cousin Jess was calling me by my first and middle names and then BAM!  Melnic was born.

So a little bit about me... I work in Higher Education, putting my Political Science Degree to good use (sarcasm), I do really enjoy my job though. It's a great fit for where I'm at in my life right now.  Let's see, I just started triathlons this summer and absolutely love it!  I did five in total, Mooseman Olympic, Black Fly International, Black Fly Sprint, Timberman 70.3 and Wallis Sands Sprint.  All of them were so much fun. I've met so many people in training and racing.

My first love, of course, is the Dave Matthews Band.  This summer was the first summer since 1997 I was not able to see them, big sigh.  They did not do a normal tour, instead a caravan consisting of four music festivals.  All four fell on weekends that were a weekend before a race or the weekend of the race.  I can't even begin to tell you of all the great friends I've met while going to see DMB.  They all know who they are.

I enjoy good beer, which is not on my nutrition plan (see below).   I'm trying to have less of it.  My favorite brewery so far is hands down Laguinitas out of California.  Little Sumpin' Sumpin' is a hoppy deliciousness.  It's pure bliss.

I'm also a huge lover of food, who doesn't love to eat?  Yesterday was National Pumpkin Day and I found a delicious pumpkin smoothie recipe online -- courtesy of Lava Magazine.  Here it is with a few tweaks:
1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
Ice
skim milk or water -- I like my smoothies extra thick, similar to a Frappe, so I use very little milk.
1 stalk celery -- just another place to get some veggies!
1/3 cup pumpkin puree (not the pumpkin pie mix, although it is tempting!)
1 tbsp ground flax seeds -- great health benefits
dash of cinnamon
pinch of nutmeg
pinch of ginger
small piece of dark chocolate (optional) -- antioxidents!

With this recipe, it brings me to my diet I'm trying to follow -- http://www.thecorediet.com/   Man, is it tough!  This is in conjuction with me starting training with http://www.qt2systems.com/   In past years while training on my own for half marathons and a full, I've always just taught myself and learned from others around me.  After Timberman 70.3 (actually the week before), I decided I needed to hire a coach.  Now, I have a coach I can ask questions at any time and I have a training schedule to follow.  No longer are the days of just winging it.  QT2 includes heart rate zones -- annoying!  I've never trained with a heart rate monitor before, and has it been a struggle!  It takes so much patience, and patience and me do not go together.  I'm a mission plan athlete which means I get my whole training plans up front and can view the entire thing at once.  My next plan starts this Monday October 31, I'm uber ecstatic and cannot wait to see what's in store for me over the winter months, especially snow shoe racing which I started up last winter.  Talk about a fun time!  This particular plan will take me through the first week in April for a half marathon, which will be a great set up for tri season!
